TLS (Transport Layer Security) replaced SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). TLS or STARTTLS should be used whenever possible. Many software developers incorrectly use the "SSL" term to stand for diverse combinations of SSL, TLS, and/or STARTTLS protocols. This leads to a lot of defoliation with how postal service programs are supposed to exist configured. Although this tabular array shows the different encryption options and corresponding port numbers equally they chronicle to the specified IMAP, POP3, and SMTP servers, the step-by-step instructions throughout this site emphasize using TLS when possible. Although many mail programs do not explicitly acknowledge TLS in their settings, well-nigh support information technology under the generic (and inappropriate) "SSL" term.
